What is a jewelry allergy?
The most common form of jewelry allergy is contact dermatitis – a skin reaction caused by direct contact with an allergen. The most common allergen in jewelry is nickel. Nickel is added to many inexpensive metal alloys because it is cheap, malleable, and strong.
Symptoms of a nickel allergy
- Redness and inflammation at the contact site
- Itching, sometimes severe burning
- Small blisters or scabs
- Dry, flaky skin
- In case of chronic exposure: eczema-like changes
Symptoms typically appear 6-72 hours after contact – not immediately.
Common allergy triggers in jewelry
- Nickel: The main allergen in jewelry. Found in many inexpensive alloys (brass, Alpaca silver, fashion jewelry alloys), in white gold (if alloyed with nickel instead of palladium), in steel alloys below 316L quality
- Cobalt: Often with nickel; similar symptoms
- Chromium: In some stainless steel variants; less common than nickel
- Copper: Can react in sensitive people; is a component of rose gold alloys
Materials that are safe for jewelry allergies
Titanium (the safest choice)
Titanium is the most hypoallergenic metal for jewelry. It contains no nickel and does not chemically react with the skin. Even people with very strong metal allergies almost always tolerate titanium. Ideal for piercings and earrings worn daily.
Stainless steel 316L (surgical steel)
Stainless steel 316L is nickel-bound – the nickel is so firmly incorporated into the alloy that it is not released. For the vast majority of nickel allergy sufferers, 316L is safe. Inexpensive, waterproof, and very durable. Not to be confused with cheap "stainless steel" without a 316L designation.
Palladium White Gold
White gold alloyed with palladium instead of nickel is nickel-free and safe for allergy sufferers. When buying white gold: explicitly ask for "nickel-free white gold" or "palladium white gold."
Real gold 585 and 750
Higher gold content means fewer allergenic metals. 585 gold (58.5% gold) has less nickel exposure potential than inexpensive 333 gold. Real gold jewelry is well tolerated by most allergy sufferers – provided it is not alloyed with nickel.
Platinum
Pure platinum contains no nickel and is very safe for allergy sufferers. The noblest and most expensive metal for allergy sufferers.
Sterling Silver 925
Generally well tolerated by most people. The copper content (7.5%) can react in very sensitive individuals. Rhodium-plated silver (with a rhodium layer) reduces direct metal contact and is therefore less allergenic.
What to do in case of a jewelry allergy reaction?
- Immediately remove the jewelry – stop contact
- Cool the skin with cold water
- Do not scratch – it worsens the reaction
- For mild reactions: Antihistamine cream or gel (pharmacy)
- For severe reactions: See a doctor; cortisone preparations may be necessary
- Long-term: Allergy test by a dermatologist (patch test) to identify specific allergens

- First, wear it for only 1-2 hours and observe your skin
- For unplated jewelry: Test on a less sensitive area (wrist vs. earlobe)
