What is a jewelry allergy?

A jewelry allergy is a contact allergy, an overreaction of the immune system to certain substances that touch the skin. The most common triggers in jewelry are:

• Nickel: The most common metal that triggers jewelry allergies. Contained in many inexpensive brass alloys, (lower quality) white gold alloys, and some stainless steels.
• Cobalt: Often found together with nickel in alloys.
• Chromium: Can be present in some metal alloys.
• Copper: Can cause the skin to turn green (harmless, but unsightly).

Symptoms of a jewelry allergy

Typical signs usually appear 12 to 48 hours after contact:

• Redness and inflammation of the affected skin area
• Itching to the point of burning pain
• Formation of blisters and weeping areas
• Scaly, dry skin at contact points
• For earring backs: swollen earlobes

If you notice such symptoms, you should remove the jewelry immediately and consult a dermatologist if the symptoms persist.

Which materials are resistant?

The good news, which also does not trigger reactions in sensitive skin:

Stainless steel

The most reliable hypoallergenic jewelry material. The nickel in solid stainless steel is bound so tightly that it is not released and therefore does not trigger allergies. Ideal for piercing jewelry and everyday jewelry.

Titanium

Titanium is completely nickel-free and is considered the most resistant metal of all. Lightweight, extremely durable, and available in various colors through anodization. Especially popular for piercings and sensitive ears.

Pure gold (585 / 750)

Fewer allergy-triggering metals are added to high-karat gold. 18-karat gold (750) is more tolerable than 8-karat (333) because the gold content is higher and the copper/nickel content is lower. However, white gold often contains nickel; look for palladium-based white gold alloys here.

Rhodium-plated silver / white gold

The rhodium plating forms a barrier between the alloy and the skin, ideal for people with mild nickel sensitivity.

Platinum

Pure platinum is completely resistant and suitable for the most sensitive skin. However, it is also the most expensive of the hypoallergenic materials.

What helps if you already have an allergy

• A clean break: Do not wear jewelry made of allergy-triggering materials anymore, even for short periods.
• Clear nail polish: As a short-term emergency solution, you can seal the contact point of the jewelry with clear nail polish. Not a permanent solution, but practical for special occasions.
• Skin cream: A greasy cream under the jewelry can act as a short-term barrier.
• Dermatological treatment: For strong reactions, corticosteroid creams can help. Consult a doctor.

Test jewelry before buying

If you are not sure whether a piece is tolerable:

• Wear it briefly on the inside of your wrist (a sensitive area) when buying it or at home.
• Wait 24 to 48 hours; if you remain reaction-free, the piece of jewelry is tolerable for you.
• Preferably buy from retailers who disclose materials clearly and transparently.
