Some pieces of jewellery survive daily showers for years without damage, while others lose their shine after just a few weeks. This guide explains exactly which jewellery is truly waterproof and what you should take off before you go into the bathroom.

What harms jewellery in water?

Water alone is often not the problem, but rather what it contains:

• Hard tap water: Can leave white deposits on surfaces.
• Chlorine (swimming pool): Aggressively attacks metal alloys and gold plating.
• Saltwater (sea): Very corrosive, especially to silver and copper alloys.
• Soap, shampoo, conditioner: Chemicals in care products can attack gold plating and make surfaces dull.
• Sweat during sports: Salts and acids in sweat oxidize silver particularly quickly.

Materials that are permanently waterproof

Solid stainless steel

Titanium

Like stainless steel, it is completely corrosion resistant. Titanium is even used in surgery and marine environments; it is absolutely waterproof. Ideal for piercings and everyday jewellery.

Solid gold (14K / 18K)

Pure gold does not rust or corrode; it is durable forever. However, the alloy metals (especially copper) in lower-karat gold react to chemicals. 18-karat gold (75% gold) is more resistant than 14-karat. Occasional showering generally does not harm solid gold, but it is still better to take it off for chlorinated water and saltwater.

Materials that are sensitive in the shower

Sterling silver 925

Silver is water-resistant but sensitive to chemicals in shower products, chlorine, and sweat. Regular showering significantly accelerates tarnishing. Recommendation: Take it off before showering and dry and polish after accidental contact.

Gold-plated jewellery

Standard gold-plated jewellery is very sensitive to water and moisture; the gold layer dissolves over time. Never wear it in the shower. PVD-gold-plated stainless steel is significantly more resistant, but you should still be careful here to protect the plating.

Jewellery with gemstones

Hard stones (diamond, sapphire, ruby) tolerate water well. Sensitive stones (pearls, turquoise, opal, malachite, moonstone) react to moisture and chemicals; definitely take them off before showering.

Swimming and sports with jewellery

Swimming pool (chlorinated water)

Chlorine is aggressive towards almost all metals except titanium and solid stainless steel. Even solid gold can become duller through regular chlorine contact. For the swimming pool: only wear stainless steel or titanium, or avoid jewellery altogether.

Sea (saltwater)

Saltwater is particularly corrosive. Silver and gold-plated jewellery suffer greatly from it. Stainless steel tolerates saltwater well, but rinsing with fresh water afterwards is still recommended.

Sports and fitness

Sweat is acidic and accelerates oxidation, especially in silver. Stainless steel and titanium, on the other hand, are not affected by sweat. Rings can become dangerous during sports (impact injuries, getting caught), so it is better to take them off.

How to recognize waterproof jewellery

Three pieces of information give it away: the base material, the type of coating, and its thickness. Stainless steel with a gold plating of several microns can withstand water permanently. Silver-plated or gold-plated brass does not do this; the layer dissolves and the copper underneath reacts with the skin.
