Why stainless steel does not tarnish

Stainless steel contains at least 10.5 percent chromium. The chromium forms an invisible oxide layer on the surface that repairs itself after a scratch. Silver, on the other hand, reacts with sulfur from the air and skin and turns dark; brass reacts with sweat and stains the skin green. Yes. RVS 316 handles saltwater particularly well, as does RVS 304, provided you rinse the jewelry briefly with fresh water afterwards. Salt crystals that dry on are the only thing that is a nuisance: they make the surface look dull and rub against the gold plating.

Does chlorine water discolor gold-plated stainless steel?

The stainless steel itself does not react. The 2.5-micron gold layer remains stable with occasional swimming; with daily training in a chlorine pool, it becomes thin more quickly at friction points. If you swim three times a week, you are better off with silver-colored stainless steel.

Why does my stainless steel jewelry turn dull?

Usually, it is a film of soap, limescale, and skin oil, not tarnishing. Lukewarm water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft cloth will remove it in 2 minutes. It is better to avoid scouring agents and toothpaste; they leave fine scratches.
