Jewellery and Sports: what you can wear, sorted by sport

Kurz gesagt: In sports, it's less about the material and more about mechanics and injury risk. What can remain in which sport.

Jewelry during sports: what you can keep on, sorted by sport. In short: Take off rings during strength training because they get crushed between the barbell and your finger. When running and taking fitness classes, long necklaces and hoop earrings are primarily in the way. In the pool, chlorine is the problem, as it attacks gold-plated costume jewelry and silver. Stainless steel is the only category that survives all three situations without damage.

As of: September 2026. By Phil Oberlaender, Corelune Jewellery, Düsseldorf.

The most important point is rarely discussed and is the only one with real potential for injury: A ring that gets caught on a barbell or piece of equipment can cause a degloving injury. This is rare, but it is the reason why rings are strictly prohibited in many gyms.

Strength Training

Rings come off, without exception. During deadlifts, forces act between the grip bar and your finger bones that can deform a ring and pinch your finger. With stainless steel, there is the added issue that it is hard enough not to bend, which causes the tissue to give way instead.

Bracelets with clasps are a nuisance at pull and push stations. A closed bangle lies against the wrist and moves with it, while a chain bracelet gets snagged.

Necklaces can stay on if they are short. Anything over 50 cm will hit your chest during squats and bench presses.

Running, Cycling, Fitness Classes

Here, the strain is mechanical, not chemical. Long necklaces swing and hit your body, which leads to skin irritation over ten kilometers. Short necklaces around the neck do not cause any trouble.

Earrings: studs yes, hoop earrings and dangly earrings no. When changing clothes or coming into contact with hoods or headphones, dangly earrings are the most likely to get torn out.

Swimming and Sauna

Chlorine attacks copper and silver content in alloys. Gold-plated pieces on brass lose their coating at friction points after just a few visits to the pool; sterling silver turns dull and subsequently tarnishes faster.

Saltwater is less aggressive but acts in the same way. Rinsing off and drying after swimming is the right reaction for every material.

In the sauna, temperature is the issue, not water. Metal stores heat and can become uncomfortably hot at 90 degrees, especially larger surface areas like a wide bangle.

What can stay on?

For everything related to water and sweat, stainless steel is the practical answer. The fish dangly earrings can handle chlorine water and showering afterward. The shell statement ring is fine for yoga and running, but should still be removed at the barbell because that is a mechanical problem, not a material one. The cuff bracelet has no clasp for anything to get snagged on.

After training, the same applies to every material: rinse off, dry off. Sweat contains salts and sulfur compounds that work on the surface overnight.

For showering and swimming, there is a separate article on waterproof jewelry in the shower. If you also don't want to take anything off at night, you will find the limits in the article on wearing jewelry while sleeping. Suitable models can be found in the waterproof collection.

Two or three concrete examples: Heart charm bracelet with zirconia made of stainless steel and Heart ring in silver and gold made of stainless steel. You can find more waterproof pieces in the waterproof pieces category.

Fittingly: What jewelry to wear with jeans and a T-shirt.

Which bad purchases can be avoided when buying jewelry?

The most common reason for a piece ending up in a drawer is not quality, but a lack of suitability for everyday life. Those who don't know their size guess, and when it comes to rings, guessing is almost always wrong. A quick look in your own jewelry tray answers most of these questions by itself.

When should you rather take off your jewelry?

Anyone who wears jewelry daily should be aware of three situations where the risk increases significantly. During sports, there is tension on clasps and eyelets; during sleep, parts get twisted; and heavy work takes a toll on the surface. Those who make this a routine only notice the difference after years, and that is exactly what it's all about.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep my wedding ring on during strength training?

Most trainers advise against it. The ring transfers the load of the barbell onto a single point of the finger and can deform or get pinched. If you don't want to take it off, use silicone rings as a substitute for training; they snap under load instead of crushing the finger.

What happens to gold-plated jewelry in chlorine water?

Chlorine attacks the base metal as soon as the gold layer is worn through even in one spot. Afterward, corrosion spreads under the layer and causes it to flake off over large areas. After the pool, the only thing that helps is immediate rinsing with clear water.

Can sweat permanently damage jewelry?

With stainless steel, no; with silver and gold-plated pieces, yes. Sweat contains salt and sulfur compounds and accelerates tarnishing and corrosion. It becomes critical if the jewelry is put away damp and not touched again until hours later.

What is the difference between costume jewelry and fine jewelry?

Fine jewelry consists of solid precious metals with a hallmark and therefore has intrinsic material value. Costume jewelry made of coated stainless steel has no resale value, but is waterproof, color-stable, and significantly cheaper. The difference lies in the purpose, not in the quality of the workmanship.
