Kurz gesagt: Jewellery and Customs: Duty-free Allowance for EU Entry (€430/€300), Personal Jewellery vs. Commercial Goods, Export Certificate, Carry Purchase Receipts, and Country-Specific Tips (Turkey, USA).

Do you take valuable jewelry with you on international trips or bring jewelry back from abroad? Then there are important customs regulations you should be aware of – to avoid unexpected costs, seizures, or fees.

Principle: Personal travel jewelry is generally duty-free

Jewelry that you wear personally or carry for your own use is generally exempt from customs duties. This applies to travel within the EU (single market – no customs) as well as travel from third countries back to Germany – up to certain value limits.

Travel within the EU

Within the EU, there are no customs controls and no value limits for personal goods, including jewelry. An exception: For commercial quantities (jewelry for resale), questions may be asked – but personal travel jewelry is always free.

Entry from Third Countries (outside the EU)

Here, duty-free allowances apply:

  • Air travel (airplane): Allowance of €430 per person – goods up to this value are duty-free
  • Land/sea travel: Allowance of €300 per person

Personally worn jewelry – i.e., a necklace around the neck, a ring on the finger – is generally not considered "imported goods" as long as it does not represent excessive quantities. However, bringing a diamond rivière worth €50,000 into the EU on your neck can lead to questions.

Taking expensive jewelry with you: What to prepare

Carry purchase receipts

For valuable jewelry you are bringing home: Pack the purchase invoice and possibly a valuation certificate. At customs, you are required to prove that the jewelry was already your property (not purchased abroad).

Export certificate for expensive items

Are you taking jewelry worth over €500 from Germany abroad and planning to bring it back? A customs officer or the DIHK can issue a free export certificate – this proves upon your return that this item belonged to you before the trip.

Photos and documentation

Photograph expensive jewelry before your trip with your passport in the picture – the easiest proof of ownership.

Bringing jewelry as a gift from abroad

If you buy jewelry for others: This counts towards the duty-free allowance (€430/€300). The value of the jewelry plus any other goods must not exceed the limit. Only items for personal use remain duty-free.

Special Countries: Turkey, UAE, USA

  • Turkey: Importing gold jewelry into Turkey – no declaration requirement up to €15,000. Over €15,000: declare.
  • UAE / Dubai: Very liberal rules for personal jewelry. Commercial import is different.
  • USA: Personal jewelry for tourists is unlimited duty-free. US citizens returning: $800 allowance.
