But silver has properties that gold does not: a cooler, clearer tone that simply has a stronger effect on certain skin tones and in certain styles. And it is significantly cheaper, which means: for the same money, you get more weight, more strength, and more chain with silver.

Why the 925 stamp is the only thing you can trust

925 is the legally required mark for sterling silver in the EU: 925 parts silver per 1000, i.e., 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent copper as the alloying partner. This stamp is located directly on the chain, usually on the lobster claw or the clasp link.

What is not a real silver stamp: "Silver Tone", "Silberfarben", "Alpaca" or "Alpacca" (a copper-zinc-nickel alloy without silver), "EPNS" (Electroplated Nickel Silver, silver-plated nickel silver). These terms sound like silver, but they are not precious metal.

No stamp, no silver. That is a rule of thumb without any meaningful exceptions. Anyone buying a chain that feels silvery and does not bear a 925 stamp does not have sterling silver in their hands.

Silver 800 vs. 925: What you should know about old jewelry

Older silver jewelry, especially German and European silver from the 19th and early 20th centuries, often bears the 800 stamp. This means 800 out of 1000 parts silver, i.e., 80 percent. 800-grade silver is slightly cheaper and tarnishes a bit faster because the higher copper content oxidizes more strongly. For jewelry buyers: 925 is the quality standard for modern silver jewelry. You will mainly find 800-grade silver in antique cutlery and older heirlooms.

There is also 999 fine silver, pure silver, with almost no alloy component. Hardly suitable for jewelry because it is too soft: A chain made of 999 silver would deform just from being worn. Fine silver is for coins, bullion, and collector's items.

Chain patterns: What looks good in silver

The choice of chain pattern influences the effect of a piece more in silver than in gold. Silver has a cooler tone, and fine structures show up particularly beautifully because the metal creates more contrast between light and shadow.

A Venetian chain is particularly beautiful in silver: the square, silkily draping links reflect light in a way that harmonizes with the cool silver tone. It is the most elegant chain choice for silver.

A cable chain (Ankerkette) is durable and versatile. In silver, it looks somewhat more relaxed than in gold, less classically elegant, more casual-chic. Good for everyday wear, combinable with almost anything.

A Figaro chain (alternating links: one long, two short) is one of the most classic silver chains ever. Slightly structured, but not overloaded. In silver, it is very beautiful and classic.

Snake chain: Smooth, silky-looking chain made of tightly fitting rings. Lays on the skin almost like a ribbon. In silver, it is very elegant but more delicate than structured chain patterns; it can kink if bent.

Which length sits at which position?

The length recommendations for silver chains are the same as for gold chains, but one note is particularly relevant for silver: Many silver chains are worn with pendants. The pendant changes the position of the chain; it pulls it forward and slightly downward. This means: if a pendant is planned, the chain should be slightly longer than without one.

As a guide: Without a pendant, the chain should sit on the collarbone: 42 to 45 cm. With a small pendant, the chain should still sit high: 45 cm. With a heavy pendant or if the chain is to fall significantly below the collarbone: 50 cm and up.

Silver vs. white gold: The common confusion

Silver and white gold often look very similar in photos. On the skin, the difference is more subtle than between yellow and white gold, but it exists: white gold after rhodium plating has a colder, almost bluish tone. Sterling silver is warmer and more ivory-colored, especially if it has tarnished slightly.

The essential difference in everyday life: silver tarnishes, white gold does not (because of the rhodium plating). Silver is significantly cheaper. White gold has a higher material value and requires occasional rhodium plating. For a chain that is worn daily and where tarnishing is not an issue: silver is the more cost-effective choice without compromising on aesthetics.

The care question: Honestly assessed

Silver tarnishes; that is not a question of if, but of when and how fast. Those who wear a silver chain daily and wipe it off briefly with a soft cloth after wearing it will significantly slow down the process. Those who store the chain in an airtight bag with anti-tarnish strips when not wearing it will slow it down even further.

Tarnished silver does not clean itself. A silver polishing cloth from the drugstore is sufficient for light to medium patina. For heavier tarnishing: jeweler cleaning or the aluminum foil method.

For most people with nickel sensitivity: yes. 925 sterling silver contains no nickel, only copper as an alloying partner. Copper allergies are significantly rarer than nickel allergies. For highly sensitive individuals: 585 yellow gold is the safe alternative, as it is alloyed.

What does a good sterling silver (925) chain cost?

A solid Venetian chain in 45 cm and 1.5 mm made of sterling silver (925) is realistically priced between 40 and 100 euros, depending on weight and retailer. Prices below that are possible, but then often with very low weight (under 3 grams) or from untrustworthy sources. Anything over 150 euros for a simple silver chain without a stone contains a significant brand markup.

Can I wear a silver chain and a gold chain together?

Yes, mixed metals is an established style principle. Chain layering consisting of a gold chain and a silver chain works if one of the metals dominates and the other serves as an accent. A mixture of equal weight tends to look accidental. Practically: Mixing metals on the same finger or wrist is less conventional than with chains, but can be used intentionally.

How long does a sterling silver (925) chain last?

With normal care (preventing tarnishing, separate storage, occasional cleaning), a solid sterling silver (925) chain lasts for decades.
