Swarovski Jewelry: Is the Price Worth It, or Will an Alternative Do?
Swarovski jewelry: is it worth the price, or will an alternative do? In short: Swarovski sells precisely cut crystal glass, usually in rhodium-plated or gold-plated metal settings, typically starting at around €60. The crystal is glass, not a gemstone, and at Mohs 6, it is more prone to scratching than cubic zirconia. If you are looking for that sparkling effect, you can get it with cubic zirconia in a stainless steel setting starting at around €14.
As of: September 2026. By Phil Oberlaender, Corelune Jewellery, Düsseldorf.
Swarovski has turned the cut crystal into a category of its own, and the cut is indeed very good. The question is exactly what you are paying for: the look, the packaging, or the name.
For a gift, any of these three answers can be correct. For a pair of stud earrings that you wear five times a week, the criteria are different.
What a Swarovski crystal is
It is industrially manufactured crystal glass, formerly containing lead, now predominantly lead-free, cut with great precision and sometimes finished with colored coatings. The value is created by precision, consistency, and the brand, not by the rarity of the raw material.
This is not a criticism, but a classification. Anyone who views jewelry as an investment should know this. For those who wear it because it sparkles beautifully, it makes little difference. How cubic zirconia compares to diamond is explained in Cubic Zirconia vs. Diamond.
Hardness determines the look after two years
| Criterion | Crystal glass | Cubic Zirconia | Diamond |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mohs hardness | approx. 6 | approx. 8 | 10 |
| Scratch-resistant | yes | hardly | no |
| Price per stone | low | low | high |
| Sparkle | strong, colored | strong, white | strong, with play of color |
| Typical setting | Brass, rhodium-plated | Stainless steel, silver | Gold, platinum |
Mohs 6 sounds hard, but it is below the quartz found in road dust, which is around 7. This is why crystal glass shows fine scratches on the facets after a year of daily wear, while cubic zirconia still looks sharp. On the first day, you cannot see the difference, but after two years, you can.
The setting matters more in everyday life than the stone
In many crystal pieces, the stone sits in a rhodium-plated brass or zinc setting. The rhodium layer wears off, and the base metal underneath can react. Typical signs are a dark rim around the stone or dull spots on the back.
A stainless steel setting does not have this problem because the material itself is durable. That is exactly where the practical difference lies in everyday life. Matching pieces can be found under Cubic Zirconia and Crystal Jewelry.
What Swarovski keeps and what it costs
Brand recognition, packaging, boutiques, the feeling when presenting it. This is real value if a gift is aimed exactly at that. A piece of jewelry in a box with a well-known logo communicates something that a plain cardboard box does not.
Depending on the piece, the price for this is a markup of 40 to 70 euros compared to a comparable look without a brand name. Whether that amount is worth it to you is an honest question and not one with a universally valid answer.
Care for stone jewelry, regardless of brand
Set stones do not like ultrasonic baths. The vibrations work on adhesive points and can loosen stones, especially with glued-in rather than prong-set examples. Toothpaste and scouring agents leave fine scratches that permanently dampen the sparkle.
What works: lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap, a very soft brush only on the underside, then pat dry. More on this in Jewelry in the Ultrasonic Cleaner.
How to tell if an alternative is any good
Look at the setting, not the stone. Is the stone held in prongs, or is it visibly glued into a recess? Glued does not automatically mean bad, but it limits the lifespan and cannot withstand solvents.
The second criterion is the back. In well-made pieces, it is open or polished; in cheap goods, it is raw and unfinished. Third criterion: the stone should show sharp edges in the light. Rounded facets mean a poor cut, and in that case, even an expensive stone will not sparkle.
Which choice for what purpose
Gift with impact when unwrapping, worn rarely: brand piece with packaging. Everyday jewelry worn in the ears five times a week: cubic zirconia in stainless steel, because it stands up better to keychains, door frames, and hand cream.
And the third variant, which many choose without naming it: a brand piece for special occasions, plus an inexpensive pair for everyday use. This protects both, and the expensive piece will look like it did on the first day even after five years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Swarovski crystals real gemstones?
No. It is industrially produced crystal glass with a defined cut. Value is created by precision and brand development, not by rarity. For the visual effect, this plays no role, but for the resale value, it does: crystal glass has virtually no material value.
Does Swarovski jewelry tarnish?
The crystal itself does not. The setting can, depending on the metal and coating. Typical signs are a dark rim around the stone or dull spots on the back. Stainless steel settings do not show this because the material is inherently durable.
What is the best alternative to a crystal pendant?
A cubic zirconia pendant in a stainless steel setting, gold-plated or silver-look. It sparkles comparably, is significantly more scratch-resistant with Mohs 8, and costs a fraction of the price. Visually, practically no one notices the difference in everyday life, unlike the price tag.
Can I have a lost crystal replaced?
With branded jewelry, it is worth asking the manufacturer; some offer repair services. With a goldsmith, a replacement stone is often possible but can easily cost more than the piece of jewelry is worth. For glued stones, re-setting is the most common repair and usually holds up well.
How do I recognize a bad cut?
Hold the stone up to the light and look at the edges between the facets. If they are sharp and straight, the cut is clean. If they appear rounded or irregular, the light scatters diffusely, and the stone sparkles dully instead of vibrantly. You can see this without a magnifying glass if you hold two pieces next to each other.
