Kurz gesagt: Jewelry for a few euros is usually made of coated zinc. What that means for your skin, durability, customs, and the cost per day of wear, and when it’s still worth buying.

Jewellery at Temu and Shein: what you really get for 3 euros. In short: Jewellery for 2 to 4 € usually consists of coated zinc or brass. It looks good in the photo and often only lasts for a few weeks with daily wear. It’s enough for a single outfit. Anyone who wears a piece every day will end up paying more via the price per day of wear than they would for stainless steel.

Status: September 2026. By Phil Oberlaender, Corelune Jewellery, Düsseldorf.

The prices are no trick; they are the logical result of the material. Zinc alloys cost almost nothing, the coating is applied very thinly, and it is manufactured in enormous quantities.

The result is a piece that looks like gold and behaves differently after two weeks. That is not a scandal; it is a product category. You should just know which one you are buying.

What happens in practice

Two things almost always occur. The skin turns greenish under rings and bracelets because copper from the base metal reacts with sweat. And the coating wears off at the edges and on the inside, usually first where the piece rubs against the skin.

In addition, there are clasps made of stamped sheet metal that give way after a few months. The article Copper and brass jewellery explains why copper and brass react in this way.

The price per day of wear changes the picture

Variant Price Realistic duration of wear Cost per month
Marketplace chain, coated zinc 3 € 1 to 2 months about 2 €
Stainless steel chain, gold-plated 20 € 2 to 4 years under 1 €
14k gold chain from 300 € decades a few cents

The purchase price is cheap, not the wearing. Anyone who buys replacements three times a year will exceed the price of a single stainless steel piece by the end of the year, but will have had the disappointment three times over. For orders from non-EU countries, customs duties and import VAT are added, which further shrinks the advantage.

When such a purchase is nevertheless correct

For a costume, a photo shoot, or a festival weekend, a piece for 3 euros is perfectly fine. It is also good for testing a trend that you are not yet sure suits you. No one needs a piece that lasts for ten years for that.

As soon as a piece is worn daily and comes into contact with skin, water, and lotion, the calculation changes. How to recognize usable fashion jewellery can be found in how to recognize solid fashion jewellery.

The legal point that many overlook

In the EU, there are limit values for nickel release for jewellery that has prolonged skin contact, as well as for lead and cadmium. The person who brings the goods into the EU market is responsible for compliance.

In the case of a private order directly from a non-EU country, that person is, in case of doubt, yourself. There is then no authority checking for you. Anyone who reacts sensitively is better off with goods from EU retailers, regardless of the price level.

How to recognize cheap goods in the product photo

Three signals almost always appear together: no weight in the description, no information about the base metal, and the same product images from a dozen other providers. Where an alloy is mentioned, it often just says "alloy," which means everything and nothing.

Another sign is the clasp in the detail photo. A lobster clasp made of bent sheet metal wire gives way faster than one made of solid material. If no clasp is shown at all in the detail images, there is usually a reason for it.

The sensible middle ground

It doesn't have to be solid gold. Gold-plated stainless steel is priced in between and solves exactly the two problems that occur with very cheap jewellery: no green fingers, no peeling layer after four weeks.

At Corelune, entry-level prices start at about 12 euros; from 59 euros, shipping is free, the goods come from Germany, and can be returned within 14 days if they don't fit. Those who want to test a piece first can find the pieces that are purchased most frequently under the bestsellers.

What you can do with existing cheap pieces

Throwing them away is rarely necessary. A ring that leaves green marks can be sealed on the inside with clear nail polish. That lasts a few weeks and must then be renewed, but it works as a transitional solution.

Earrings are a special case. The post sits in the ear hole, where the skin barrier is broken. For this position, switching to stainless steel is most worthwhile, even if the rest of the jewellery box remains as it is. Suitable models can be found under Stud earrings.

Material, dimensions, and prices at a glance

Showering, swimming, and sports do not harm stainless steel; it does not tarnish. For reference, the values from the Corelune assortment.

Frequently asked questions

Is jewellery from Temu harmful to health?

This cannot be said across the board because there are thousands of different sellers behind it. What is certain: with direct imports from non-EU countries, no one checks the European limit values for nickel, lead, and cadmium for you. Anyone who has already reacted to fashion jewellery should rely on goods from EU retailers for pieces with permanent skin contact.

Why does the ring on my finger turn green?

Because there is usually brass or a copper alloy under the coating. Sweat and hand cream dissolve tiny amounts of copper, which reacts with skin oils to form a greenish compound. It comes off with water and is harmless, but returns as soon as the layer is exposed.

Is it worth buying if I change jewellery often anyway?

Then yes, with one caveat. Expect that some of the pieces will be unusable after a short time, and don't buy anything that sits directly in the ear hole. For stud earrings, stainless steel is the more sensible choice even for people who like to change frequently.

Is customs duty charged on orders from non-EU countries?

For shipments from non-EU countries, import VAT is charged, and in addition, customs duties apply above a certain value. Some platforms calculate this at the time of purchase, others do not. With a 3-euro item, the amount is small; with a bulk order, it can eat up the price advantage.

Can I have cheap jewellery refurbished?

Re-gilding is almost never worth it because the labour costs far exceed the value of the goods. For pieces with personal value, it is still possible; a goldsmith will give you the price in advance. For everything else, replacing it with a more durable piece is the cheaper decision.
