What lies beneath the gold

With Gold Vermeil, the gold plating is applied to sterling silver and is at least 2.5 microns thick. This looks very good. However, silver oxidizes, and as soon as the gold layer is exposed at points of friction, you will get dark edges. With Doublé, a layer of gold is mechanically rolled onto a base metal; the plating is thicker than with any electroplating, but the process is priced accordingly. With gold-plated stainless steel, the layer sits on steel that neither rusts nor tarnishes. If it becomes thin, a silver tone shimmers through. Unsightly, but not dark.
