Gold-plated: The cheapest option

Gold-plated jewelry has a very thin layer of gold (under 0.5 microns) on a base metal (brass, zinc). This coating wears off quickly, especially in areas subject to friction.

Gold-filled: More than just plated

Gold-filled means that at least 1/20 of the piece's weight consists of gold. The gold layer is approx. 50 to 100 times thicker than that of gold-plated jewelry. More durable and more resistant.

Gold-plated (Electroplated): The standard

Electroplating is the most common process in the jewelry industry. The thickness of the gold layer determines the durability:

0.5 microns: Lasts a few months
1 to 2 microns: Lasts 1 to 2 years with regular wear
3+ microns: Solid plating, lasts several years

Vermeil: The solid form
