Gold-plated jewelry is affordable and at first glance looks like real gold. But the differences in quality and durability are enormous – depending on the plating process. We explain the most important terms and help you decide when gold-plated jewelry makes sense and when it doesn't.

Gold Plated: The Cheapest Option

Gold-plated jewelry has a very thin layer of gold (under 0.5 micrometers) on a base of base metal (brass, zinc). This coating wears off quickly – especially in areas exposed to friction.

Gold-filled: More Than Just Plated

Gold-filled means that at least 1/20 of the item's weight is gold. The gold layer is about 50–100 times thicker than with gold-plated jewelry. More durable and skin-friendly.

Gold-Plated (Electroplated): The Standard

Electroplating is the most common process in the jewelry industry. The thickness of the gold layer determines the durability:

• 0.5 micrometers: Lasts a few months
• 1–2 micrometers: Lasts 1–2 years with regular wear
• 3+ micrometers: High-quality plating – lasts several years

Vermeil: The Highest Quality Form

Gold-plated sterling silver with a minimum gold thickness of 2.5 micrometers – that's called Vermeil (pronounced: ver-may). Advantages: The silver base metal is more precious, the gold layer is thicker. Ideal for people with sensitive skin.
