Kurz gesagt: Buying extension chains: Types, what to look for when buying (metal tone, compatibility, length) and how to use extensions for a layered look.

An extension chain – also called a chain extender or simply an extension – solves one of the most common jewelry problems: the chain is too short. Maybe it doesn't suit your neckline, fits too tightly around your neck, or you want to wear the same pendant at different lengths. With an extension chain, you're flexible. This guide explains everything you need to know.

What is an extension chain?

An extension chain is a short piece of chain (typically 5–15 cm) that hooks into the clasp of an existing chain to increase its overall length. It has either lobster clasps, jump rings, or rings on both sides that are compatible with the clasps of the main chain.

Extension chains are inexpensive (3–20 €), easy to use, and can significantly increase the wearability of a favorite necklace.

When do you need an extension chain?

  • The chain is too tight (choker that sits uncomfortably)
  • The chain doesn't suit the current neckline (too short for a deep décolletage)
  • You want to wear the same pendant at different lengths
  • A chain from abroad has a different standard size
  • You want to wear a chain longer than usual for a layering look
  • Pregnancy or weight changes have altered the optimal length

The different types of extension chains

Simple link chain extension

The most common model: A short piece of link chain with jump rings at both ends. Fits most standard clasps. Available in 5, 7, 10, or 15 cm. Discreet and practical.

Extension with charm or pendant

Some extension chains have a small charm or pendant at the end – a star, moon, heart, or a ball. These also serve as decoration and make the transition to the extension a conscious design element.

Multi-position extension

An extension with multiple rings or jump rings at different intervals allows the chain to be adjusted to various lengths – like a built-in extension system. Very practical for chains that you want to wear at different lengths.

What to look for when buying an extension chain?

Metal tone must match

The most important thing: The extension must be in the same metal tone as the main chain. Yellow gold for a yellow gold chain, silver for silver, rose gold for rose gold. An incorrect color is immediately noticeable and looks unfinished.

Clasp compatibility

Check if the lobster clasp of the extension fits into the jump ring of your chain. Standard lobster clasps (3–4 mm) fit most chains. For very delicate chains or special clasps, compatibility may be limited.

Material quality

A low-quality extension chain on a high-quality chain immediately makes it look worse. Invest in an extension made of the same material as your chain – 925 silver for silver, gold-plated stainless steel for gold-plated stainless steel.

Length of the extension

  • 5 cm: For minimal adjustments, e.g., if the chain is 1–2 cm too short
  • 7–10 cm: The most versatile extension – bridges most length differences
  • 15 cm: For significant length additions, e.g., from choker to collar length

Having an extension chain permanently installed

Alternatively to a separate extension, a jeweler can permanently solder the extension into the chain – then it is no longer removable, but optimally integrated. Cost: 10–25 €. Useful if you always wear the chain at a certain length.

Extension chains as part of the layering look

In the layering look, extension chains become a style tool: Extensions allow all chains in a layering composition to be brought to exactly the desired length intervals, without having to buy new chains.

Extension chains and bracelets

The same principle also works for bracelets. A short bracelet extension (3–5 cm) makes a too-tight bracelet wearable. Especially useful for high-quality gold bracelets whose standard length doesn't fit.
