What is silver plating?

Silver plating vs. 925 sterling silver

• Sterling silver (925): 92.5% silver through and through, from the inside to the outside. Retains its silver content even if the surface becomes worn.
• Silver-plated jewellery: Only silver on the outside (a thin layer). If the layer is rubbed off, the base metal is revealed, often brass (yellowish) or copper (reddish).

How thick is the silver layer

The layer thickness determines the durability:

• Flash silver / thin silver plating: Under 1 micron. Lasts from weeks to a few months.
• Standard silver plate: 1 to 5 microns. Lasts 1 to 3 years with moderate use.
• Heavy silver plate / thick silver: 10 to 50 microns. Lasts 5 to 15+ years. Used for solid silver-plated cutlery.

In fashion jewellery: Almost always flash or standard. Only buy if the layer thickness is specified.

How do I recognise silver-plated jewellery?

• Hallmark "EPNS": Electro Plated Nickel Silver. Not genuine silver jewellery.
• Hallmark "SP" or "Silver Plate": Silver-plated jewellery.
• No "925" hallmark: Without a 925 hallmark, it is not genuine silver jewellery (though it may be silver-plated).
• Abrasion marks: If a different colour shows through at friction points (clasp, inside of rings), that is the base metal beneath the silver plating.

Care for silver-plated jewellery differently than silver

• Never polish with abrasive agents: Polishing mechanically wears away the thin silver layer, which is counterproductive.
• Only clean gently with a damp cloth: Minimise mechanical cleaning.
• No soaking: Water can penetrate beneath the silver layer and attack the base metal.
• No contact with sweat: Sweat quickly attacks the silver layer.

Having silver-plated jewellery re-silvered

Electroplating workshops (goldsmiths or electroplating businesses) can re-silver plated jewellery. Cost: approx. €20 to €50 depending on the piece. Sensible for pieces with emotional value (heirlooms, family cutlery). Often not economical for inexpensive fashion jewellery pieces.

What does everyday life tolerate in stainless steel parts and what does not

The question is rarely whether the material can withstand water, but whether tension and friction are involved. During sports, tension acts on clasps and eyelets, parts twist while sleeping, and heavy work wears down the surface. This accounts for most of what is later perceived as a material defect.

What care do stainless steel parts really need?

Anyone who wears stainless steel parts daily accumulates skin oils and residue, and that is precisely what makes surfaces dull. Warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid, a soft toothbrush for the gaps, rinse thoroughly and pat dry. The effort is only a few minutes a month and is therefore lower than for any precious metal.

What goes wrong most often when buying stainless steel parts?

There are often worlds between what impresses in a product photo and what you put on in the morning. Firstly, choosing a trend piece instead of your own style, secondly the wrong size, thirdly a material that does not suit everyday life. Mistakes of this kind only repeat themselves until you name them once.

Which combinations work with stainless steel parts?

With stainless steel parts, less is almost always the safer decision, but two coordinated parts beat a single one. Between two stacked parts there should be at least five centimetres or a visible size difference. In case of doubt: one piece less almost always looks better.

Does stainless steel remain colour-stable permanently?

Stainless steel loses its colour more slowly than the alternatives. Where a coating is present, for example with coloured parts, abrasion over years should still be planned for.
