Silver-Plated Jewelry: Everything About Silver Plating and Its Durability
Silver-plated jewelry is cheaper than real silver jewelry but looks similar. What's behind silver plating, how long does it last, and what should you look out for? This guide explains all aspects of silver coating.
What is Silver Plating?
Silver plating is an electroplating process: a base metal (usually brass, copper, zinc, or stainless steel) is immersed in a silver salt bath, and an electric current deposits a thin layer of silver on its surface. The result looks like silver jewelry – but is only silver on the surface.
Silver Plating vs. 925 Sterling Silver
- 925 Silver: 92.5% silver through and through – from the inside to the outside. Retains its silver content even if the surface wears down.
- Silver-plated jewelry: Only silver on the outside (thin layer). If the layer rubs off, the base metal becomes visible – often brass (yellowish) or copper (reddish).
How Thick is the Silver Layer?
The layer thickness determines durability:
- Flash Silver / Flash Plating: Under 1 micron. Lasts weeks to a few months.
- Standard Silver Plate: 1–5 microns. Lasts 1–3 years with moderate use.
- Heavy Silver Plate / Thick Silver: 10–50 microns. Lasts 5–15+ years. Used for high-quality silverware plating.
In fashion jewelry: Almost always flash or standard. Only buy if the layer thickness is specified.
How Do I Identify Silver-Plated Jewelry?
- Stamp "EPNS": Electro Plated Nickel Silver – silver-plated nickel silver. Not real silver jewelry.
- Stamp "SP" or "Silver Plate": Silver-plated jewelry.
- No "925" stamp: Without a 925 stamp, it is not real silver jewelry (though it may be silver-plated).
- Abrasion marks: If a different color shows through at friction points (clasp, inside of rings) – that is the base metal under the silver plating.
Caring for Silver-Plated Jewelry – Different from Silver
- Never polish with abrasive agents: Polishing mechanically removes the thin silver layer – counterproductive.
- Only clean gently with a damp cloth: Minimize mechanical cleaning.
- Do not soak: Water can penetrate under the silver layer and corrode the base metal.
- Avoid contact with sweat: Sweat quickly corrodes the silver layer.
Re-silver Plating Silver-Plated Jewelry
Electroplating workshops (goldsmiths or electroplating businesses) can re-plate silver-plated jewelry. Cost: approx. €20–50 depending on the piece. Sensible for pieces with sentimental value (heirlooms, family silverware). Often not economical for inexpensive fashion jewelry pieces.
