This question almost always comes up before giving a gift. And the average is about as helpful as the average shoe size: it's correct for the middle and wrong for everyone else.

For women, the range 52 to 58 covers a good three-quarters of all cases, and for men the range 58 to 66. The ring finger of the dominant hand is usually half a size to a whole size larger than that of the other hand.

Three ways to measure secretly

First: Borrow an existing ring and measure the inner diameter with a ruler. Diameter multiplied by 3.14 equals the inner circumference and thus the size. Make sure that the borrowed ring is worn on the same finger.

Second: Place the ring on a sheet of paper, trace the inside with a sharp pencil and measure the circle later. Less accurate, but the ring is only missing for seconds.

Third: Wrap a strip of paper around the finger, make a mark, and measure the strip. This only works if the person cooperates. Measure in the evening, because fingers can swell by up to one size during the day. Even more in hot weather, less in winter.

The solution if you don't know the size

Adjustable rings solve the problem completely. They are open at the back and can be bent open by several sizes, usually in the range 52 to 60.
