Bracelet or bangle: Two fundamentally different concepts

The first difference you need to understand: a bracelet and a bangle are not the same, and the distinction is relevant for gold.

A bracelet has individual links that are connected to each other, and a clasp. The length is therefore adjustable to the wrist, and the bracelet sits with a certain amount of flexibility. It can vary in width and chain pattern, from fine 2 mm link chains to wide 8 mm curb chains.

A bangle is a closed or wide-open hoop made of metal that is slid over the hand. It has no clasp, sits on the wrist, and moves up and down while worn. Bangles come in a completely closed form (must fit over the hand) or as an open C-shape (can be easily widened and adjusted).

For everyday life, a bracelet is more practical; it is easier to put on and take off. The bangle has a stronger visual impact but does not fit as snugly as a well-adjusted bracelet.

The right size: No guessing, but measuring

Gold bracelets are measured in length, not in an abstract size system. The most common standard lengths are 18 cm, 19 cm, and 20 cm. For a proper fit, you should measure your actual wrist circumference and then add 1 to 1.5 cm. This results in a bracelet that moves comfortably with some leeway without sliding around too much.

Why leeway is important: A bracelet without leeway presses against the skin during movement, can become uncomfortable, and leaves marks when worn for a long time. Too much leeway, on the other hand, lets the bracelet slide down to the knuckles, which is annoying and puts strain on the clasp.

Measuring wrist circumference: Measuring tape directly above the wrist, i.e., over the wrist bone. No measuring tape at hand? A strip of paper is enough; wrap it around the wrist once, mark the overlap, and measure the length.

For bangles: The tightest point when putting it on is the hand, not the wrist. The opening of the bangle must be at least as large as the circumference over the knuckles (metacarpal bones). The open C-bangle is more flexible here: it can be easily bent open and adjusted.

Chain patterns: What works well on the wrist

Similar principles apply to the wrist as to necklaces, but with an additional factor: movement and abrasion. The wrist rotates, hits surfaces, and comes into contact with textiles. This puts more strain on bracelets than on necklaces.

Anchor chain / flat anchor chain is the most resistant pattern for a bracelet; the oval links interlock stably and are less susceptible to deformation than finer patterns. The first choice for daily wearers.

Venetian chain (square, silky-falling links) is beautiful to look at on the wrist, but somewhat more delicate than the anchor chain. Clearly suitable for everyday wear, but less resistant during intense physical activity.

Curb chain and Cuban link chain are the stronger bracelet patterns, flat, present, and very resistant. For wearers who want a visible statement.

Tennis bracelet: A line of densely set stones (usually diamonds or cubic zirconia) in a setting. Elegant, but less suitable for everyday use than metal bracelets; the settings of the stones are more sensitive to small impacts.

The clasp: The often underestimated quality feature

The clasp of a gold bracelet is the hinge between security and everyday frustration. A poorly closing lobster claw that opens too easily is not just annoying, it is a real risk of loss. A clasp that clicks, that resists, that you can feel is closed: that is quality.

Magnetic clasp: Practical, but recommended for gold jewelry only with very light bracelets. Magnets hold well under downward tension but can open due to lateral movement. Not a suitable clasp for expensive pieces.

Width, weight, look: Finding the right proportions

As a general guideline: Narrower wrists (under 15 cm circumference) are beautifully framed by bracelets up to 4 mm wide. Wider wrists carry bracelets from 4 mm well; narrower pieces can visually disappear here. This is not a rule, but a starting perspective.

Weight plays a greater role than one might initially think. A solid 14k gold bracelet with a width of 6 mm can weigh 8 to 15 grams, which is noticeable.
