The signet ring is back, but most people buy it too large. An 18-millimeter-wide plate on a slim hand looks like it was borrowed. The plate width should approximately correspond to the width of the finger on which the ring sits.

Finger, plate, proportion

On the little finger, a plate width of 10 to 14 millimeters is common; on the ring finger, 12 to 16 millimeters; and on the index finger, even more is possible. Oval plates appear more classic, rectangular ones more modern, and round ones neutral. Anyone wearing the ring daily should choose a flat plate, because high edges get caught on pockets and fabric.

The question of size

Signet rings sit wider than narrow band rings, which makes the same size feel tighter. From a band width of 6 millimeters, order a half size larger. Engraving, yes or no

Stainless steel is usually engraved by laser; the result is permanent and finer than traditional manual engraving. Below a plate width of 12 millimeters, any engraving other than a single letter will become illegible.
