You know the feeling: a few hours after putting it on, it starts to itch. A reddish spot forms under the ring, your earlobe reacts, a fine rash appears on your wrist. You take off the jewelry – and wonder if you just got bad material. Or if something is wrong with you.
The good news: there's nothing wrong with you. The bad news: this problem won't go away on its own, and cheap jewelry makes it worse over time, not better.
This article explains what's really behind jewelry allergies, which materials are permanently safe – and which only appear to be so.
The Most Common Cause: Nickel
Nickel is the most commonly used alloying metal in inexpensive jewelry – and at the same time one of the most common triggers of contact allergies in Europe. According to the EU Cosmetics Regulation, nickel in jewelry with direct skin contact may release a maximum of 0.5 micrograms per square centimeter per week. Many imported products from the Far East significantly exceed this limit.
What happens is an immunological reaction: nickel ions, which dissolve from the metal due to sweat, penetrate the skin and are recognized as foreign bodies by the immune system. Once sensitized – which often only happens after years – one will react to any nickel exposure, even in traces. The reaction intensifies with each subsequent contact.
This explains why some people wear fashion jewelry for years without problems until symptoms suddenly develop. It's not a coincidence or an oversensitivity. It's a classic sensitization process.
Why Gold-Plated Jewelry Is Not a Solution
Gold-plated jewelry initially seems like an obvious answer. The gold layer separates the skin and the base metal – as long as it's intact. The problem lies in the word "as long as". A standard gold plating (PVD or galvanic) is between 0.5 and 5 micrometers thin. For comparison: a human hair measures about 70 micrometers.
At friction points – the inside of a ring, the back of an earring, where a necklace daily rubs against a collar – this layer wears off within a few months. Then the nickel-containing base metal is exposed to the skin. The problem is not solved, but only postponed by a few months.
Anyone who wants to wear jewelry without problems permanently needs materials that do not contain nickel – and that means throughout, not just on the surface.
These Materials Are Truly Skin-Friendly
14K Yellow Gold is the most reliable choice for everyday wear. The alloy consists of 58.5 percent fine gold as well as copper and silver – no nickel. This applies to reputable European manufacturers who comply with EU standards. The 585 hallmark on the piece is the legally required proof of authenticity.
925 Sterling Silver contains copper as an alloying partner, but no nickel. For most people with nickel sensitivity, sterling silver is perfectly wearable. The 925 hallmark directly on the piece of jewelry is also the quality proof here.
18K Palladium White Gold is the best option for those who like white gold. White gold can contain nickel depending on the alloy – which is the cheaper, but more problematic option. Palladium-alloyed white gold is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. When buying, explicitly ask or request the alloy composition.
Platinum PT950 is the most compatible jewelry metal of all. It contains no nickel, hardly reacts chemically with bodily substances, and is almost always compatible even with severe nickel allergies. The disadvantage is the price, which is significantly higher than gold.
Surgical Stainless Steel 311L is alloyed nickel-free and is therefore used in medicine for implants. For jewelry, it's an inexpensive, durable option – without the material value and aesthetics of precious metal.
How to Identify Nickel in Your Jewelry
The easiest way: the fineness mark. If 585, 750, or 925 is directly on the piece of jewelry – not on the packaging, not on a leaflet, but on the metal itself – it is regulated precious metal that must guarantee EU conformity.
No stamp means: no precious metal in the regulated sense. The piece may still be nickel-free, but there is no proof requirement. When in doubt: have the stamp checked by a goldsmith. It takes two minutes and costs nothing.
There are also nickel test kits available from pharmacies (dimethylglyoxime reaction) that can detect nickel in jewelry. Apply a drop to the metal – a pink discoloration indicates nickel. Available for under 10 euros.
What to Consider for Your Next Purchase
If you are prone to skin reactions, you should ask three questions with every jewelry purchase: What exactly is the material? Is there a fineness mark? And for white gold: Is it palladium- or nickel-alloyed?
A retailer who cannot or will not answer these questions is not a retailer from whom you should buy. This applies online as well as in brick-and-mortar stores.

Can a nickel allergy disappear?
A nickel allergy, once developed, does not disappear. The immune system does not "forget" the sensitization. What can improve: the intensity of the reaction if you consistently wear nickel-free materials and permanently avoid contact. The only truly effective approach is prevention through suitable materials.
Is 925 silver safe for people with metal allergies?
For most people with nickel sensitivity: yes. Sterling silver (925) contains no nickel – the alloy consists of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper. Rarely, there are also copper allergies, but these are significantly less common than nickel allergies.
Why does expensive brand-name jewelry also cause problems?
Because price and brand status are not indicators of material quality. Some well-known jewelry brands use gold-plated silver or silver-nickel alloys. The only reliable indicator is the fineness mark in combination with the alloy specification – not the logo.
Can I have my old jewelry tested for nickel?
Yes. A goldsmith or a testing laboratory can reliably measure the nickel content of a piece of jewelry. Alternatively, the dimethylglyoxime test from the pharmacy serves as a first orientation. It shows a reaction at more than approximately 0.01 percent nickel content.
