Sweat, water, friction, cosmetics. Sweat contains salts and acids that attack base metals. Water penetrates settings and clasps. Friction occurs at night when a chain drags along the pillow. Even the right material fails with the wrong construction. A very fine anchor chain under 1 millimeter link thickness gets tangled while sleeping and eventually breaks at the weakest point.
