Tarnishing is not dirt; it is a chemical reaction. Sulfur compounds from the air, sweat, and cosmetics react with base metals, forming a dark layer on the surface. Silver first turns yellowish, then brownish, and finally almost black.

Why stainless steel is the exception

Stainless steel contains chromium. The chromium reacts with oxygen on the surface, forming an ultra-thin, colorless layer that blocks further attack. If it gets scratched, it rebuilds itself within minutes. This is exactly why stainless steel jewelry remains as bright as on the first day, even after three years, without polish or silver baths.

The case where even stainless steel looks darker

It happens. With gold-plated pieces, the coating can become thinner at friction points, for instance on the inside of a ring or the bar of a clasp. This is not tarnishing, but abrasion, and it looks different: not a dark film, but a lighter, silvery spot. Only a thicker coating helps against this, not cleaning. The stainless steel core does not. The gold layer on top also does not tarnish because gold is chemically inert. What can happen is mechanical abrasion in areas with constant friction. The effect shows up as a lighter spot, not a dark film, and only appears after several months of daily wear at the earliest.
