Redness, itching, green spots, sensitive skin, and the wrong jewelry are an unfortunate combination. But no one with sensitive skin has to give up jewelry. With the right knowledge about materials, coatings, and wearing habits, everyone can wear beautiful jewelry without discomfort. This guide explains what really helps with sensitive skin.

What causes skin reactions to jewelry?

Safe material #1: Titanium

Titanium is the most resilient metal on the jewelry market, completely resistant, lightweight, and biocompatible. Titanium jewelry is used for technical implants and dental materials. The only reliable option for fresh piercings and highly sensitive skin. Disadvantage: Limited design range, fewer gemstone settings.

Safe material #2: Stainless steel

Solid stainless steel does contain nickel, but it releases it so minimally that 95% of people with a nickel allergy show no reaction. Biocompatible, very resilient, easy to care for. Ideal for stud earrings in fresh piercings and everyday jewelry for sensitive skin.

Safe material #3: 14k / 18k yellow gold

Real yellow gold is resilient (the alloy contains silver and copper). Frequently chosen for sensitive skin, but also the most expensive. 18k gold in particular, with a minimal proportion of foreign metals, is ideal for very sensitive skin.

Safe material #4: 925 sterling silver

Silver itself is well-tolerated. The copper content (7.5%) can trigger slight reactions in very sensitive skin, but is harmless for the vast majority. Silver can tarnish and leave temporary dark marks; this is not an allergy, but a chemical reaction.

Solid gold plating on silver (Gold Vermeil)

Gold plating on a sterling silver (925) base with at least 2.5 microns of gold is, the base material (silver, not nickel) is resilient. Important: The gold plating must not be worn off, otherwise the base material will come into contact with the skin.

• Gold-plated jewelry where the plating has peeled off; the base material underneath is often nickel-containing brass or zinc

• Clear nail polish on jewelry: As a barrier between metal and skin, an old trick that can help with mild sensitivity
• Remove jewelry after exercising: Sweat promotes the release of metal from coatings
• Keep ear holes dry: Moisture in ear holes promotes reactions
