What is white gold really?

White gold is a gold alloy, not a standalone metal. Like yellow and rose gold, it contains fine gold as a base—58.5 percent in 14-karat quality, 75 percent in 18-karat. The color is created by the alloying metals: in white gold, these are mainly palladium or nickel, depending on the manufacturer and quality level.

The problem: This alloy does not produce a pure white tone. Natural 14-karat white gold (without coating) is yellowish-gray, a warm, slightly champagne-colored tone that can hardly be compared to the ivory white of a rhodium-plated surface.

That is why white gold is rhodium-plated in the final production step: A thin layer of rhodium (a platinum-group metal) gives the surface the expected pure white appearance. This layer is 0.5 to 2.5 micrometers thin, which corresponds to a fraction of a human hair.

Rhodium plating: What it means, what it requires

Rhodium is not eternal. Through daily wear, friction with skin, clothing, and surfaces, the layer wears off in exposed areas. The timeframes vary: On a wedding ring that is worn daily and is constantly exposed to friction, the rhodium plating on the underside of the band can fade after one to two years. On a pendant that experiences less abrasion, the rhodium plating can last three to five years.

The result: The piece appears more yellowish or gray in worn areas than when freshly rhodium-plated. This is not a quality defect, but a normal process. The solution is re-rhodium plating at a goldsmith, which costs 20 to 50 euros depending on the piece and typically takes half a day.

For the purchasing decision, this means: White gold jewelry requires occasional maintenance investments that yellow gold does not need. Those who accept this get a beautiful, valuable metal with its own appearance. Those who want a maintenance-free white solution should seriously consider platinum.

Nickel- or palladium-alloyed white gold: An important difference

White gold can be manufactured in two ways: with nickel or with palladium as the whitening alloying metal.

Nickel-alloyed white gold is the cheaper variant. Nickel makes the gold very hard and easy to work with, but it is suspected of causing allergies. The EU limits the nickel content in jewelry with skin contact to a maximum of 0.5 micrograms per square centimeter per week. As long as the rhodium plating is intact, there is no skin contact with the base metal. If the rhodium plating wears off and the user is nickel-sensitive, reactions can occur.

Palladium-alloyed white gold is the high-quality variant. Palladium is itself a platinum-group metal that rarely triggers reactions. The result is a naturally lighter white gold that does not cause allergic reactions even after the rhodium plating has worn off. The price is higher, as palladium is more expensive than nickel.

When buying white gold jewelry, especially for people with sensitive skin or known metal allergies: Ask explicitly about the alloy. "Palladium-alloyed white gold" is the safe answer.

White gold vs. platinum: When is which the better choice?

This is the most common comparison question for white jewelry. Both look similar after rhodium plating, but they are fundamentally different.

White gold (14k or 18k): Has gold content and gold value, requires rhodium plating, is lighter than platinum, and is more affordable. For most people, it is the right choice if they want white jewelry without paying platinum prices.

Platinum PT950: Is white by nature, requires no rhodium plating, is durable, and significantly heavier than gold (density 21.4 g/cm³ vs. 13 to 14 g/cm³ for 14k gold). Scratches on platinum look different than on gold: the metal is not worn away, but displaced, creating a matte patina. Price: typically 30 to 60 percent higher than comparable white gold jewelry.

My recommendation: For everyday jewelry that is worn regularly and taken to be rhodium-plated occasionally, 14-karat white gold is a fair choice. For wedding rings and jewelry that should remain permanently high-gloss without maintenance, and for people with nickel sensitivity: Platinum justifies the higher price.

What is specifically important when buying?

Three questions you should ask with every white gold purchase:

First: Which alloy? Nickel or palladium. Palladium contains no nickel.

Second: Is the fineness stamp visible? 585 or 750 directly on the piece. No stamp, no solid gold.

Third: How often does it need to be rhodium-plated? An honest answer, depending on the piece and intensity of wear, shows that the merchant knows what they are talking about.
