Sapphire Colours — Not Just Blue!
While blue is the most famous and classic sapphire colour, sapphires actually occur in almost every colour of the rainbow. Pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, and white (colourless) sapphires are all available. The remarkable orange-pink variety known as padparadscha is among the rarest and most coveted of all sapphires.
What Makes a Blue Sapphire the Best?
The finest blue sapphires display a rich, velvety cornflower blue or royal blue colour with excellent saturation and brilliance. The most prized come from Kashmir (now extremely rare), Burma (Myanmar), and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Madagascan and Australian sapphires are also of high quality and more readily available.
Sapphire Quality Grading
As with all coloured stones, colour is the primary value driver. Clarity is secondary — sapphires commonly contain inclusions, and an eye-clean sapphire with exceptional colour is far more desirable than a flawless stone with a mediocre colour. Cut is also important, as a well-cut stone will maximise colour and brilliance.

Sapphire is one of the hardest natural materials on earth, scoring 9 on the Mohs scale — second only to diamond. This makes sapphire jewellery exceptionally durable and suitable for everyday wear, including engagement rings.
