Tanzanite: The One-Place Gemstone That Took the World by Storm

Tanzanite: The One-Place Gemstone That Took the World by Storm

The Rarest Blue on Earth

Tanzanite is one of the most remarkable gemstones ever discovered. Found in only one place on earth — a small area near Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania — it is estimated to be a thousand times rarer than diamond. Since its discovery in 1967, tanzanite has risen to become one of the world's most coveted coloured gemstones. At Corelune Jewellery, we are passionate about this extraordinary stone.

What Makes Tanzanite So Special?

Tanzanite displays a phenomenon called trichroism — it shows three different colours depending on the viewing angle: blue, violet, and burgundy. This colour-shifting quality, combined with its vivid blue-violet hue, gives tanzanite an entirely unique visual character that no other gemstone can replicate.

Tanzanite Quality and Grading

The most prized tanzanites display a vivid, saturated blue-violet colour. Larger stones tend to show more saturated colour — stones below one carat can appear lighter in tone. Clarity is also important; eye-clean tanzanites with strong colour saturation command premium prices. Tanzanite is heat-treated as standard to enhance the blue-violet colour (raw tanzanite is typically brownish-burgundy before treatment).

How Durable Is Tanzanite?

Tanzanite scores 6.5–7 on the Mohs hardness scale and has some directional cleavage, meaning it can crack if struck with force. It is best suited to earrings, necklaces, and pendants for everyday wear. If worn in a ring, choose a protective setting such as a bezel or halo and remove the ring before engaging in physical activity.

Tanzanite as an Investment

Given that tanzanite is found in a single, finite geological deposit, many gemstone experts believe the supply will be exhausted within decades. This geological scarcity makes high-quality tanzanite an increasingly attractive long-term investment piece.
